Within New Testament writings, but in a special way in Paul’s letters, we can observe a significant presence of the greek term parresía, or frank language. This term was not only a rhetorical-linguistic instrument, on Paul’s contemporary time, but an attitude made by the speaker, or by the epistolar author before his recipients. On Eph 6,19, we see this term and its relation with the evangelizing mission of the author. Moreover, this concept was not only a linguistic function for Paul’s (...) writings and time actions, but it can have an effectiveness in present time. (shrink)

Este trabalho propõe analisar a presença da religião em alguns espaços públicos educacionais. Por meio da metodologia da observação participante identificamos dois momentos que se articulam entre si: a influência da Escola sem Partido ao longo dos estágios docentes do curso de Ciências Sociais Licenciatura em Campos dos Goytacazes; e a presença de movimentos missionário cristãos, originários dos EUA, que visam influenciar a juventude estudantil evangélica a uma transformação social, nacional e mundial, no espaço universitário. Tais descrições nos traz questionamentos (...) sobre os desafios e perspectivas da formação docente nos voltando, novamente, para a discussão entre ciência, religião e política. Sendo assim, o presente trabalho nos traz muitas interrogações sobre algumas questões que perpassam a questão religiosa e são pertinentes ao debate educacional. Diante da organização e expressões de fé demarcados por discursos e ações de estudantes visamos trazer breves reflexões sobre o ensino de Sociologia no cotidiano escolar e despertar atenção para a presença de movimentos religiosos no espaço universitário. In an unpublished note Reddy introduced an extended intuitionistic linear calculus, called LLMS (for Linear Logic Model of State), to model state manipulation via the notions of sequential composition and ‘regenerative values’. His calculus introduces the connective ‘before’ ▹ and an associated modality †, for the storage of objects sequentially reusable. Earlier and independently de Paiva introduced a (collection of) dialectica categorical models for (classical and intuitionistic) Linear Logic, the categories Dial2Set. These categories contain, apart from the structure needed (...) to model linear logic, an extra tensor product functor and an extra comonad structure corresponding to a modality related to the extra tensor product. It is surprising that these works arising from completely different motivations can be related in a meaningful way. In this article, following joint work with Corrêa and Haeusler, we first adapt Reddy's system LLMS providing a commutative version of the connective ‘before’ and its associated modality and then construct a dialectica category on Sets , which we show is a sound model for the modified version of Reddy's the system LLMSc. Moreover, following the work of Tucker, we provide another variant of the Dialectica categories with a non-commutative tensor and its associated modality, which models soundlyLLMS itself. The main objective of this paper – resulting from an academic speech at UFG (Universidade Federal de Goiás) -is to outline the importance of Thomas Hobbes’ most known political work: Leviathan. Taking the figure of a big marine monster, quite in the same sense of the biblical metaphor used in the dialogue between God and Job to introduce the danger or the benefit of a big power controlled by men, Hobbes’s arguments terrorized the Church but helped in creating new ways (...) of thinking so to conceive the modern state. In the same movement, many other “demons” emerged to fight against religious power and also other forms of totalitarianism. Nevertheless, even shocking our conventional assumptions, Hobbes’ political work may be considered – among other liberal thinkers – a defense of individualism and many other aspects of civil order, which make him one of the most important contributor to modernity and also an essential source to think about our reality. In this paper we give a brief treatment of a theory of proofs for a system of Full Intuitionistic Linear Logic. This system is distinct from Classical Linear Logic, but unlike the standard Intuitionistic Linear Logic of Girard and Lafont includes the multiplicative disjunction par. This connective does have an entirely natural interpretation in a variety of categorical models of Intuitionistic Linear Logic. The main proof-theoretic problem arises from the observation of Schellinx that cut elimination fails outright for an intuitive (...) formulation of Full Intuitionistic Linear Logic; the nub of the problem is the interaction between par and linear implication. We present here a term assignment system which gives an interpretation of proofs as some kind of non-deterministic function. In this way we find a system which does enjoy cut elimination. The system is a direct result of an analysis of the categorical semantics, though we make an effort to present the system as if it were purely a proof-theoretic construction. (shrink)

Neste artigo, pretendemos explorar a teoria que Tomás de Aquino desenvolve para explicar o funcionamento da percepção humana. São introduzidas, nessa teoria, as operações realizadas pelo sentido comum, dentre elas, a função de unificação das múltiplas informações que são recebidas a partir dos sentidos externos. Será abordado, precisamente, o seguinte problema: que tipo de critério é mobilizado pelo sentido comum no processo de unificação dessas múltiplas informações? A fim de identificar a resposta a esse problema, tomamos como ponto de partida (...) a investigação sobre os tipos de informações que são apreendidas pelos sentidos externos. Pretendemos mostrar que essas informações se reduzem a dois tipos básicos: informações a respeito das qualidades e da quantidade das coisas ao nosso redor. Na sequência, investigaremos como Tomás de Aquino caracteriza a operação de unificação, principalmente através da capacidade de percepção simultânea das múltiplas informações. Por fim, procuraremos reconstruir o critério da operação de unificação através da tese tomística de que as informações relativas à quantidade das coisas são apreendidas como sujeitos das qualidades. Nessa medida, a unificação das qualidades percebidas pode ser feita em função da identificação do sujeito comum a todas essas qualidades. (shrink)

In this paper we consider an intuitionistic variant of the modal logic S4 (which we call IS4). The novelty of this paper is that we place particular importance on the natural deduction formulation of IS4— our formulation has several important metatheoretic properties. In addition, we study models of IS4— not in the framework of Kirpke semantics, but in the more general framework of category theory. This thesis describes two classes of Dialectica categories. Chapter one introduces dialectica categories based on Goedel's Dialectica interpretation and shows that they constitute a model of Girard's Intuitionistic Linear Logic. Chapter two shows that, with extra assumptions, we can provide a comonad that interprets Girard's !-course modality. Chapter three presents the second class of Dialectica categories, a simplification suggested by Girard, that models (classical) Linear Logic and chapter four shows how to provide modalities ! and ? for this second class (...) of construction. A common misconception among logicians is to think that intuitionism is necessarily tied-up with single conclusion calculi. Single conclusion calculi can be used to model intuitionism and they are convenient, but by no means are they necessary. This has been shown by such influential textbook authors as Kleene, Takeuti and Dummett, to cite only three. If single conclusions are not necessary, how do we guarantee that only intuitionistic derivations are allowed? Traditionally one insists on restrictions on particular rules: implication right, (...) negation right and universal quantification right are required to be single conclusion rules. In this note we show that instead of a cardinality restriction such as one-conclusion-only, we can use a notion of dependency between formulae to enforce the constructive character of derivations. The system we obtain, called FIL for full intuitionistic logic, satisfies basic properties such as soundness, completeness and cut elimination. We present two motivating applications of FIL and discuss some future work. (shrink)

Hybrid logics are a principled generalization of both modal logics and description logics, a standard formalism for knowledge representation. In this paper we give the first constructive version of hybrid logic, thereby showing that it is possible to hybridize constructive modal logics. Alternative systems are discussed, but we fix on a reasonable and well-motivated version of intuitionistic hybrid logic and prove essential proof-theoretical results for a natural deduction formulation of it. Our natural deduction system is also extended with additional inference (...) rules corresponding to conditions on the accessibility relations expressed by so-called geometric theories. Thus, we give natural deduction systems in a uniform way for a wide class of constructive hybrid logics. This shows that constructive hybrid logics are a viable enterprise and opens up the way for future applications. (shrink)

In conjunction with machine learning and statistical techniques, deeper and more sophisticated models of language and speech are needed to make significant progress in both existing and newly emerging areas of computational language analysis. The first aim of this note is to describe an algebraic structure, more primitive than lattices and quantales, which corresponds to the intuitionistic flavour of Linear Logic we prefer. This part of the note is a total trivialisation of ideas from category theory and we play with a toy-structure a not distant cousin of a toy-language. The second goal of the note is to show a generic categorical construction, which builds models for Linear Logic, similar to categorical models GC of (...) [deP1990], but more general. No anseio de compreender a verdade divina, Santo Anselmo, em seu Proslogion, desenvolve o célebre unum argumentum a respeito da existência de Deus. Na segunda parte da obra, ao expressar-se sobre os atributos divinos e sobre as antinomias que se lhe apresentam, o Doutor Magnífico surpreende o leitor com a revelação de que Deus é summe sensibilis — sumamente sensível. Parte-se então de duas visualizações: a possibilidade de Deus ser sensível em si mesmo (secundum se), ou em relação a nós (...) (secundum nos); isto é, da possibilidade de Deus sentir, embora carecendo de sentidos, e da possibilidade de O sentirmos, sendo Ele incorpóreo. Resumo: A honra foi amplamente tratada por diversos autores antigos, tais como Aristóteles e Cícero. No medievo, Tomás de Aquino retoma alguns temas da Antiguidade, oferecendo uma formulação nova. Para isso, ele se serve do conceito de dulia, superando o tradicional binômio com a latria. Na realidade, ele reputa à dulia uma virtude anexa à justiça que visa prestar honras ou homenagens aos homens excelentes, em particular aos virtuosos. De fato, o Estagirita já considerava a honra como um “prêmio da (...) virtude”. Nesse contexto, se percorre todo corpus thomisticum para analisar o conceito de dulia e de honra, quando esta se refere ao assunto tratado. Para isso, se pergunta o que é a dulia propriamente, a quem deve ela ser prestada, se a honra pode ou deve ser desejada, o papel da magnanimidade, como e para que se honra. A proposta tomasiana poderia trazer um novo olhar a respeito da temática, infelizmente um pouco esquecida nos dias de hoje.: Honor was amply dealt with by several ancient authors such as Aristotle and Cicero. In the Middle Ages, Thomas Aquinas revisited certain themes from Antiquity, offering new formulations. To do this, he used the concept of dulia, going beyond the traditional contrast with latria. He regards dulia as a virtue connected to justice and that seeks to pay honour or homage to excellent men, particularly virtuous ones. In fact, Aristotle already regarded honour as a “reward for virtue”. In this article, the body of Thomistic work is explored in order to analyse the concept of dulia and honour. To this end, it is asked what dulia truly is, to whom it should be rendered, whether honour can or should be desired, what the role of magnanimity is, and how honour should be shown and for what. The Thomistic proposal offers a new outlook on a subject which, unfortunately, has been somewhat neglected in the present day. (shrink)

The λσ-calculus adds explicit substitutions to the λ-calculus so as to provide a theoretical framework within which the implementation of functional programming languages can be studied. This paper generalises the λσ-calculus to provide a linear calculus of explicit substitutions, called xDILL, which analogously describes the implementation of linear functional programming languages.Our main observation is that there are non-trivial interactions between linearity and explicit substitutions and that xDILL is therefore best understood as a synthesis of its underlying logical structure and the (...) technology of explicit substitutions. This is in contrast to the λσ-calculus where the explicit substitutions are independent of the underlying logical structure. (shrink)

Este artigo discute as transformações na indústria fonográfica desde os anos 90 provocadas pelo formato mp3, que, em uma primeira abordagem, é apontado como responsável pelo encolhimento da venda de discos e por promover a pirataria fonográfica em escala mundial. Neste recorte, conceitos como autoria, direito autoral e outros tem de ser repensados à luz desta tecnologia ao mesmo tempo em que se discute seu potencial criativo e sua capacidade de democratizar a produção sonora.

O artigo analisa a questão do “fim da filosofia” no pensamento contemporâneo. Demarcando o embate da filosofia consigo mesma, com a ciência e com alguns pensadores da atualidade que ousaram tematizar o fim, busca, pela reflexão ética, restabelecer a filosofia como um autêntico saber humano. We consider two systems of constructive modal logic which are computationally motivated. Their modalities admit several computational interpretations and are used to capture intensional features such as notions of computation, constraints, concurrency, etc. Both systems have so far been studied mainly from type-theoretic and category-theoretic perspectives, but Kripke models for similar systems were studied independently. Here we bring these threads together and prove duality results which show how to relate Kripke models to algebraic models and these in turn to the (...) appropriate categorical models for these logics. The main goal of this work is to argue that reincarnation can no longer be an answer to existential anguish, as described by philosophers such as Heidegger and Sartre, because rebirth was the answer for people who were immerse in a religious or even a metaphysical outlook of life, while modern human condition emerges precisely when those forms of certainty begin to fade away. Nevertheless, we will show that the idea of reincarnation can still be a valuable tool for understanding (...) certain features of western philosophy, such as the thermodynamic model of thought. "This article presents an analysis of William Lane Craig’s argument of the finitude of the past based on the impossibility of the formation of an actual infinite. To achieve the aim of this academic work we use, as a primary base, a book written by Craig called Reasonable Faith: Christian Truth and Apologetics and a chapter written by the same author along with James Sinclair called The Kalam Cosmological Argument in The Blackwell Companion to Natural Theology. These works, in our (...) opinion, provide sufficient primary material to study the topic. However, other articles and books by Craig are also referenced, and the commentaries of some other authors, who deal with this problem, are also used. Throughout this work, we consider the historical context and Craig’s incorporation of the kalam cosmological argument. We go on to analyse the presuppositions given by this author and consequently we study, progressively, the formulations that Craig himself made to reach his conclusion. /// Este artigo apresenta uma análise do argumento de William Lane Craig sobre a finitude do passado baseado na impossibilidade da formação de um infinito atual. Para atingir o objetivo deste trabalho acadêmico, utilizamos como fonte primária uma obra escrita pelo próprio Craig, intitulada Fé racional: verdade cristã e apologética, e um capítulo escrito pelo mesmo autor em colaboração com James Sinclair chamado O argumento cosmológico kalam, em The Blackwell Companion to Natural Theology. This article examines the relationship between light, splendour and beauty in the thought of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite. From a systematic analysis of the Corpus Dionysiacum, we will see to what point he forged an aesthetic perspective from the property of “splendour” in comparison with “proportion”, to coordinate the conception of light in Christian Revelation and in Neoplatonic Philosophy.

A história do pensamento ocidental, desde seus primórdios na Grécia Antiga até os tempos atuais, é transpassada pela questão de Deus, que mantém a sua relevância mesmo no contexto pós-metafísico no qual estamos inseridos. A busca pelo significado derradeiro da existência humana justapõe a questão do homem à questão de Deus, que adquire, dessa forma, um status imperativo. Mas, como articular o discurso sobre Deus na atual conjuntura, caracterizada por uma visão materialista e imediatista da existência humana? Em nossa reflexão, (...) buscamos analisar as perspectivas da linguagem em relação à abordagem de Deus. Verificamos a impossibilidade da utilização de uma linguagem determinativa, com pretensões de definições últimas, no discurso sobre o Absoluto, visto que a experiência de Deus suscita múltiplas representações, sendo todas elas visões parciais de uma realidade inacessível ao cálculo racional. Diante disso, buscamos percorrer a via delineada por Emmanuel Levinas, que não se apressa em nomear o Infinito, mas aborda sua significação a partir da trama ética. Consideramos esperançosa tal abordagem, frente aos desafios que se apresentam nos tempos contemporâneos. Palavras-chave : Deus; cálculo racional; ética; Levinas.The history of western thought, since its beginning in ancient Greece up to now, is surrounded by God, who has kept his relevance even in the post - metaphysical context in which we are in. The ultimate search for the real meaning of human existence juxtaposes mankind and God, therefore it acquires an imperative status. However, how does one formulate the speech about God nowadays, when there is a materialistic view of human existence? In this reflection, we intend to analyze the perspectives of language in relation to God. It is identified the impossibility of use of certainty in language, claiming correct definitions in the speech about The Absolute, once that the experience of God raises multiple interpretations, and all of them are partial views of an inaccessible reality to the rationale. Therefore, we tend to follow Emmanuel Levinas’ line of thought which is not in a hurry to name the Infinity, but deals with its meaning through ethics. Neste ensaio, eu analisarei criticamente três definições de boato. Na primeira seção, eu considerarei a explicação de C. A. J. Coady, na qual o boato é um caso de testemunho aparente, mas não é um caso de testemunho genuíno. Na segunda seção, eu considerarei a definição de boato oferecida por David Coady, na qual o boato se espalha em uma larga cadeia sem status oficial. Na terceira seção, eu considerarei a definição de boato de Axel Gelfert, na qual o boato (...) não tem corroboração independente de evidência de primeira mão ou de fonte oficial. Na quarta e última seção, eu proporei uma definição, na qual o boato é um caso de testemunho genuíno sem confirmação oficial, cuja fonte original foi perdida ou nunca existiu. (shrink)

Neste ensaio apresentamos uma introduçáo à noçáo deontológica de justificaçáo epistêmica. Mostramos que a noçáo deontológica de justificaçáo epistêmica surge de um paralelo traçado entre ética e epistemologia mediante a utilizaçáo de um vocabulário deontológico para a avaliaçáo de um status epistêmico de nossas crenças. Indicamos que a noçáo deontológica de justificaçáo encontra sua origem em uma tradiçáo que tem John Locke como um de seus representantes mais ilustres. Depois disso, exploramos a relaçáo entre justificaçáo e normatividade, mostrando que os (...) juízos epistêmicos sáo mais naturalmente entendidos em linhas teleológicas. Por fim, consideramos o que caracteriza um dever epistêmico. (shrink)

In this essay we consider the possibility of knowledge being transferred or transmitted via testimony. Initially, we present an introduction to the epistemology of testimony, by indicating their origin in a tradition that has John Locke, David Hume and Thomas Reid as their representatives. We present a version of the non-reductionist thesis. We show that the non-reductionist about knowledge must request from the speaker a testimonial epistemic performance that is truth conductive, as well as intellectual integrity from the listener.
